720w, https:\/\/thunder.snu.ac.kr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/chundoong-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chundoong is a heterogeneous CPU\/GPU supercomputer designed and built by the THUNDER Research Group at Seoul National University and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manycoresoft.co.kr\/\">ManyCoreSoft<\/a>&nbsp;in October 2012. It is used to evaluate parallel programming models (<a href=\"http:\/\/snucl.snu.ac.kr\/\">SnuCL<\/a>), software techniques, and applications developed in Seoul National University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After porting the double precision LINPACK (HPL) to Chundoong (written in MPI + OpenCL) and optimizing it with our software techniques for multiple GPUs, we have achieved 106.8 TFLOPS (1.907 TFLOPS per node). Chundoong is ranked 277th in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/top500.org\/\">TOP500<\/a>&nbsp;list and 32nd in the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/green500.org\/\">Green500<\/a>&nbsp;list of November 2012. Its per-node performance is #1 among 412 clusters in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/top500.org\/\">TOP500<\/a>&nbsp;of November 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design of Chundoong is focused on achieving low cost and low power consumption. As a result, Chundoong costed only US$ 0.67 million (159 MFLOPS\/dollar). A 19-inch rack contains 8 chassis (up to 16 compute nodes), InfiniBand switches, and a pump unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"340\" height=\"152\" src=\"https:\/\/thunder.snu.ac.kr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/chundoong-chassis.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thunder.snu.ac.kr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/chundoong-chassis.jpg 340w, https:\/\/thunder.snu.ac.kr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/chundoong-chassis-300x134.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Software<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Chundoong uses Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 and Lustre 2.3.54.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/snucl.snu.ac.kr\/\">SnuCL<\/a>&nbsp;and MPI libraries (Open MPI 1.6.4, MVAPICH2 1.9b) are provided to users. Chundoong also uses a self-made job scheduling and monitoring software, called&nbsp;<em>thor<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GPU-Centric Design and Software Techniques<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Chundoong features a higher ratio of GPUs to CPUs to fully obtain the benefits of accelerators &#8211; low cost and high energy efficiency. As a result, CPUs become a major performance bottleneck. Optimizations aimed at reducing the overhead of CPUs are applied to our HPL implementation. We are planning to incorporate the optimization techniques to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/snucl.snu.ac.kr\/\">SnuCL<\/a>, an OpenCL framework for heterogeneous clusters, developed by our research group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gaming GPUs and Water Cooling System<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>AMD Radeon HD 7970 is a graphics card for desktop PCs, not for high performance computing. Thus, it does not have ECC memory and is not designed for high-density systems. To reduce memory errors and to improve the reliability of GPUs, Chundoong adopts a self-made water cooling system. It keeps CPUs and GPUs at a low temperature (below 50\u00b0C). It exploits storage devices, such as HDDs and NVMe SSDs, to enlarge the available main memory capacity at a small cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SnuQS uses an automatic circuit partitioning technique based on its qubit permutation and amplitude layout. Moreover, SnuQS prefetches amplitudes to overlap computation and I\/O. SnuQS com- bines the circuit partitioning technique with the three-step qubit permutation to guarantee that the I\/O operations are grouped in a contiguous block, and the block size is large enough to achieve high I\/O bandwidth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SnuQS also provides accompanying quantum benchmark applications: QFT, Grover\u2019s search, Quantum teleportation, 8-cycle 49-qubit quantum supremacy circuit, 8-cycle 53-qubit sycamore circuit, Variational quantum eigensolver, Quantum phase estimation, quantum neural network, QAOA-MAXCUT, and QAOA-3SAT. It consists of three components: an OpenCL-C-to-Verilog compiler (soff-compiler), a board support package (soff-hardware-*), and a runtime system (soff-runtime).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SOFF automatically synthesizes a datapath to execute many OpenCL kernel threads in a pipelined manner. It also synthesizes an efficient memory subsystem for the datapath based on the characteristics of OpenCL kernels. Unlike previous high-level synthesis techniques, SOFF adopts a formal way to handle variable-latency instructions, complex control flows, OpenCL barriers, and atomic operations that appear in real-world OpenCL kernels. SFMalloc never uses any synchronization for common cases. It uses only lock-free synchronization mechanisms for uncommon cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SFMalloc provides each thread with a private heap and each thread handles memory requests on the heap. SFMalloc is completely synchronization-free when a thread allocates a memory block and deallocates it by itself. Synchronization-free means that threads do not communicate with each other at all. On the other hand, if a thread allocates a block and another thread frees it, we use a lock-free stack to atomically add it to the owner thread&#8217;s heap to avoid the memory blowup problem. SFMalloc also exploits various memory block caching mechanisms to reduce the latency of memory management. It accurately simulates exceptions and interrupts to enable whole-system simulation including the OS. Since it is implemented in a modular manner in C++, it can be easily extended with other system components by subclassing or adding new classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FaCSim is based on an interpretive simulation technique to provide flexibility, yet achieving high speed. It enables fast cycle-accurate architecture simulation by means of three mechanisms. First, it computes elapsed cycles in each pipeline stage as a chunk and incrementally adds it up to advance the core clock instead of performing cycle-by-cycle simulation. Second, it uses a basic-block cache that caches decoded instructions at the basic-block level. Each SPE has a small software-managed local store. Applications must explicitly control all DMA transfers of code and data between the SPE local stores and the main memory, and they must perform any coherence actions required for data transferred. The need for explicit memory management, together with the limited size of the SPE local stores, makes it challenging to program the Cell BE and achieve high performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COMIC (A COherent shared Memory Interface for Cell BE) is a runtime system that might solve above problems. It provides the program with an illusion of a globally shared memory, in which the PPE and each of the SPEs can access any shared data item, without the programmer having to worry about where the data is, or how to obtain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COMIC is implemented entirely in software with the aid of userlevel libraries provided by the Cell SDK. For each read or write operation in SPE code, a COMIC runtime function is inserted to check whether the data is available in its local store, and to automatically fetch it if it is not. We propose a memory consistency model and a programming model for COMIC, in which the management of synchronization and coherence is centralized in the PPE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is necessary to build your parallel program with COMIC on a Cell BE machine (Cell Blade or PlayStation 3). However, the display panel causes severe degradation to captured images, such as low transmittance, blur, noise, and flare. The restoration of UDC-degraded images is challenging because of the unique luminance and diverse patterns of flares. Existing UDC dataset studies focus on unrealistic or synthetic UDC degradation rather than real-world UDC images. In this paper, we propose a real-world UDC dataset called UDC-SIT. To obtain the non-degraded and UDC-degraded images for the same scene, we propose an image-capturing system and an image alignment technique that exploits discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to align a pair of captured images. UDC-SIT also includes comprehensive annotations missing from other UDC datasets, such as light source, day\/night, indoor\/outdoor, and flare components (e.g., shimmers, streaks, and glares). We compare UDC-SIT with four existing representative UDC datasets and present the problems with existing UDC datasets. To show UDC-SIT\u2019s effectiveness, we compare UDC-SIT and a representative synthetic UDC dataset using five representative learnable image restoration models. The result indicates that the models trained with the synthetic UDC dataset are impractical because the synthetic UDC dataset does not reflect the actual characteristics of UDC-degraded images. UDC-SIT can enable further exploration in the UDC image restoration area and provide better insights into the problem. Tackling such issues is challenging because of the complex degradation of UDCs, including diverse flare patterns. However, no dataset contains videos of real-world UDC degradation. In this paper, we propose a real-world UDC video dataset called UDC-VIT. Unlike existing datasets, UDC-VIT exclusively includes human motions that target facial recognition. We propose a video-capturing system to acquire non-degraded and UDC-degraded videos of the same scene simultaneously. Then, we align a pair of captured videos frame by frame, using discrete Fourier transform (DFT). We compare UDC-VIT with six representative UDC still image datasets and two existing UDC video datasets. Using six deep-learning models, we compare UDC-VIT and an existing synthetic UDC video dataset. The results indicate the ineffectiveness of models trained on earlier synthetic UDC video datasets, as they do not reflect the actual characteristics of UDC-degraded videos. We also demonstrate the importance of effective UDC restoration by evaluating face recognition accuracy concerning PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS scores.
